I think monsters in society are very common, but it depends on where you live. In the deep south homosexuals are still harassed, and in some states I am pretty sure oral sex is still illegal. I feel like anyone outside your community or political ethics could be considered a "monster."

A couple of lesser monsters that I can think of would be cultists (Ramtha's School of Enlightenment http://www.ramtha.com/), people who practice severe body modification (depending on where you go), and to a certain extent, people with disabilities. These types of people are considered to be on the outside of mainstream, and can make people uncomfortable, unfortunately. They are not, however, as extreme as say, pedophiles, to which I think will always be considered monsters.

I must say that I have trouble with your argument that pedophiles could potentially become "mainstream." (Not to say that you think it should happen!) Mainly because sex with a child isn't the same as it would be between consenting adults. Children are incredibly impressionable, and can be convinced to do really messed up things, especially if its by an adult they trust. I feel that it is similar to saying that rape will one day become normal and socially excepted.

What is really horrible is that in the 50's, some people used the word homosexual to describe a pedophile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4enfUyGWSY
